To: From: (active 2015-2016)
To: From: was an artist publication exploring and expanding the field of correspondence art managed by Violet Eckles-Jordan and Tannaz Motevalli.
To: From: aimed to engage with all forms of correspondence in order to understand people as social beings and our innate desire to make connections with those near and far. Rather than creating a publication that is isolated to one form of correspondence, the goal of To: From: was to produce issues in a communication format related to the theme. Depending on that format, publication subscribers received works in unique ways, such as emails, postal mail, or on their phones via an answering machine.
During its active period, To: From: released five issues: Silence Isn’t Real (October issue, answering machine), In The Spirit of Capitalism (November/December issue, Secular Secret Santa—AKA S.S.S.), Oops! (January issue, “spam” emails), Yours Truly (February issue, mailed package), and Migrations (September issue, mailed package.)
Silence Isn’t Real (October 2015) featured sounds and spoken text by artists: Miles Clark, Eshovo Momoh, Caleb Kaiser, Shelley Miller, Udita Upadhyaya, Alp Seyrekbasan, Thomas Hack, and Kelsey Ellison. Below is the promotional flyer.
Oops! (January 2016) featured emails by artists: Anonymous, BG, Violet Callis, Violet Eckles-Jordan, Will Krauland, Tannaz Motevalli, and Nazedh Mulholland. Below are some screenshots of the emails released as part of the issue.
Yours Truly (February 2016) featured zines, postcards, and posters by artists: HMGK, Sarah Damsky, Charles L. Rice, Luis Mejico and Tyler Lumm, and Lisa Stertz. Below (left) is a page from a zine by HMGK and (right) a cootie catcher from a zine by Sarah Damsky.
